The Dr Edward Koch Foundations Life Program was established in 2008 to help address the alarming increase in suicide-related deaths in the Cairns and Hinterland region. The Life Program’s charter, “every life matters”, sees the Foundation, through its chief executive officer and team of qualified counsellors, reach out to communities in need of suicide prevention and bereavement support.

The Life Program consists of five components – the Far North Queensland Suicide Prevention Taskforce, the Life Workshops, the Life Bereavement Support Service, the Life Community Plans and the Life Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Bereavement Support Group. Included in these components are the provision of resources and education to strengthen communities and also support for individuals coping with bereavement.

Special projects in recent years include the Cyclone Yasi Disaster Area Suicide Prevention Plan, the Yarrabah Life Community Plan and the Northern Peninsula Area Suicide Prevention Strategy.
