The Dr Edward Koch Foundation’s FNQ Suicide Prevention Taskforce held the inaugural FNQ Suicide Prevention Week in 2018. It was a highly successful initiative which raised widespread awareness of the issues of suicide and garnered support from corporations and community organisations to aid in reducing the stigma attached to mental illness and suicide in the Cairns region. Following on from its success, this year's FNQ Suicide Prevention Week 2020 will be held in September. Included in this week, are the World Suicide Prevention Day and RUOK Day. World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is specifically observed, every year since 2003, on 10 September to provide worldwide awareness, commitment and action to prevent suicides. RUOK Day, which encourages people to stay connected and have meaningful conversations, is always on the second Thursday of the month, therefore this year’s date is 10 September.
Aims of the Project
The project aims to provide a week of targeted events to raise awareness, provide education, disseminate information and reduce stigma around suicide and poor mental health.
Many events are being organised for the week. Each has been selected to cover a wide demographic of people. However, because of COVID-19, FNQ Suicide Prevention Week 2020 is in a very different format. This year our campaign will have much more visual impact and without the need to connect physically.
Purpose
There are not many people whose lives haven’t been touched in some way by the loss of suicide: a friend, son, daughter, cousin, work colleague, acquaintance. Depression and anxiety leading to suicide are common – around one in seven Australians will experience depression in their lifetime – yet there continues to be significant stigma and discrimination associated with having a mental health condition.
Social change is needed to eliminate this stigma and discrimination. A week of activities during FNQ Suicide Prevention Week from September 4-11 will raise awareness of these issues with the aim of reducing stigma and discrimination.
Sponsorship
Your sponsorship can demonstrate to customers, media and employees that your organisation cares about wider social issues and is interested in the mental health and wellbeing of the community. This simultaneously creates awareness of your brand and the issues surrounding suicide and mental health. A full sponsorship outline is attached including package deals to help make it easy for your business or organisation to sponsor.
